You should know that raw petroleum is separated by distillation into LPG (liquid petroleum gas), gasoline-naphtha, kerosene, gas oil, heavy oil and residual oil. Among them, gasoline as a fuel of cars and naphtha as a raw material of plastic, fiber and ink are very useful. These distillates (C5~C10 hydrocarbons) support human society.
Gasoline has a huge demand. Practically, all of petroleum products are produced until gasoline is produced until the demand is satisfied, and usage of the co-produced other products is being found until they have been consumed. Therefore, the most important thing is the gasoline production. Main component of crude oil is heavy and residual oil distillates (components which will be distilled into heavy and residual oil), consisting of large molecules. Therefore, cracking of petroleum into gasoline-naphtha over a zeolite catalyst with Brønsted acid sites are being carried out. In other words, the raw materials of gasoline, plastic and fiber are being produced using the zeolite catalyst. Your life is being supported by catalysts. In the early of 20th century, humankind faced to a crisis of starvation because of population explosion. A catalyst for synthesis of ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen was developed, agriculture was improved with fertilizers from ammonia, and humankind overcame the crisis. Most of plastic, fat, fiber, solvent, ink and liquid crystal etc. are being produced from naphtha, coal and biological resources by chemical reactions using catalysts. |
