Catalyst Characterization Laboratory

A catalyst accelerates rate(s) of chemical reaction(s). It does not look a creative thing, because it should be slow but the reaction proceeds without the catalyst. However, in some cases, catalysts multiply the rate 1,000,000 times. In some other cases, catalysts can convert hydrocarbons, which are inactive at a low temperature but converted into CO2 and H2O via complete oxidation at a high temperature in air without the catalysts, into useful carboxylic acids and aldehydes through partial oxidation at a low temperature. The catalysts can produce the materials which are practically impossible to obtain without the catalysts. Thus, catalysis is a creative phenomenon

There are few opportunities to learn about catalysis even for the students in chemistry. However, catalysis is very widely utilized in chemical industries. It is better to say that most of the chemical processes utilize catalysts. Catalysts are main actors in chemical plants.

There are not so many laboratories in solid catalysis, and they are distributed to limited universities. On the contrary, there are many researchers in manufacturers of chemistry, petroleum, plant construction, synthetic resin, automobile and electric instrument. Many of them have not studied solid catalysis in university, but after joining the companies, have learned it. It can be felt from the fact that seminars for beginners in companies organized by Catalysis Society of Japan gather so many attendants. Currently, there are many job offers for persons who studied solid catalysis.

In Department of Materials Science, Faculty of Engineering, Tottori University, you can learn advanced catalysis. In addition, you can study catalysis in our laboratory.
