A catalyst bed is installed between engine and muffler to decompose NO_x, CO and unreacted hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas.

Often I meet people who think "catalyst acts as a filter", but this is wrong. If there is only a filter, the pollutant will remain and increase there. In contrast, the catalyst converts the pollutant into a harmless material. Therefore, we will never meet the pollutant for ever (exactly, until the life of catalyst will end; surprisingly, the automobile catalyst usually keeps its peformance for more than 10 years).

Thus, catalysts completely solve the pollution problems. These catalysts are called environmental catalysts.
